Probate overview

The Old Saybrook Probate District was constituted July 4, 1859, from the Essex Probate District. The Old Saybrook Probate District merged with the Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Saybrook, Saybrook, and Westbrook Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the new Saybrook Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Chester, Clinton, Deep River, Essex, Haddam, Killingworth, Lyme, Old Saybrook, and Westbrook.

  • July 1854-July 3, 1859 Essex District (Name of district was Old Saybrook until July 1859 when the new Old Saybrook District was established)

Orange, New Haven County

Town incorporated May 1822. Parent towns: Milford, New Haven.


Probate overview

The Orange Probate District was constituted January 8, 1975, from the New Haven Probate District. The Orange Probate District merged with the Milford Probate District on January 5, 2011 to create the Milford – Orange Probate District, which presently serves the municipalities of Milford and Orange.

The Oxford Probate District was constituted June 4, 1846, from the New Haven Probate District. The Oxford Probate District merged with the Roxbury, Southbury, and Washington, and Woodbury Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Region # 22 Probate District, which serves the municipalities of Bethlehem, Oxford, Roxbury, Southbury, Washington, Watertown, and Woodbury.

The Plainfield Probate District was constituted May, 1747 from the Windham Probate District. The Plainfield Probate District merged with the Killingly Probate District on January 5, 2011 to create the Plainfield - Killingly Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Canterbury, Killingly, Plainfield, and Sterling.

The Plainville Probate District was constituted May 1909, from the Farmington Probate District. The Plainville Probate District merged with the Bristol and Plymouth Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Region #19 Probate District which serves the municipalities of Bristol, Plainville, and Plymouth. On January 9, 2019, Plainville left Region #19 to join the Farmington Regional Probate District.

The Plymouth Probate District was constituted May 31, 1833, from the Waterbury Probate District. The Plymouth Probate District merged with the Bristol and Plainville Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Region #19 Probate District which served the municipalities of Bristol, Plainville, and Plymouth. On January 9, 2019, Plainville was reassigned to the Farmington Regional Probate District, and the Region #19 Probate District was renamed the Bristol-Plymouth District.

Probate overview

The Pomfret Probate District was constituted May 1752, from the Plainfield and Windham Probate Districts. The Pomfret Probate District merged on January 5, 2011 with the Ashford, Brooklyn, Eastford (part), Putnam, Thompson, and Woodstock Probate Districts to create the Northeast Probate District. The Northeast Probate District serves the municipalities of Ashford, Brooklyn, Eastford, Pomfret, Putnam, Thompson, and Woodstock.

The Pomfret Probate District served the following towns at various times:

  • Ashford, May 1752 - June 3, 1830
  • Brooklyn (except part taken from Canterbury), May 1786 - June 2, 1833
  • Killingly (two north societies that later became the towns of Putnam and Thompson), May 1752 - June 3, 1830
  • Thompson, May 1785 - May 24, 1832
  • Union, May 1752 - May 1759
  • Woodstock, May 1752 - May 29, 1831

Portland, Middlesex County

Town incorporated May 1841. Parent town: Chatham (now named East Hampton).


Probate overview

The Portland Probate District was constituted April 22, 1913, from the Chatham Probate District. The Chatham/East Hampton Probate District Court records previous to January 6, 1915 are held by the Portland Probate District. The Portland Probate District merged with the East Haddam, East Hampton, and Marlborough Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Region #14 Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of East Haddam, East Hampton, Marlborough and Portland.
