The Waterbury Probate District processed probate matters for the Town of Middlebury from its incorporation. In January 2011 the town of Middlebury was to the Naugatuck Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Beacon Falls, Middlebury, Naugatuck and Prospect.

The Middletown Probate District was constituted in May 1752 from the East Haddam, Guilford, and Hartford Probate Districts. The Middletown Probate District currently serves the municipalities of Cromwell, Durham, Middlefield, and Middletown.

It also served the following municipalities at various times:

  • Berlin (part taken from Middletown), May 1785 - June 1, 1825
  • Chatham (area north of Salmon River), October 1767 - May 31, 1824
  • Haddam, May 1752 - June 2, 1830

The Milford Probate District was constituted May 30, 1832, from the New Haven Probate District. The Milford Probate District merged with the Orange Probate District on January 5, 2011 to create the Milford - Orange Probate District, which serves the municipalities of Milford and Orange.

The Litchfield Probate District merged with the Harwinton, Northwest Corner, and Thomaston Probate Districts on January 5, 2011, to create the Litchfield Hills Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Canaan, Cornwall, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Thomaston, and Warren.
