Marcus Holcomb held a number of political posts in local and state government and the judiciary before being convinced by J. Henry Roraback, head of the State Republican Committee to run for governor of the State of Connecticut in 1914. Holcomb ran for reelection in 1916 and 1918, becoming the State's first three-term Governor since the adoption of the biennial term. During the six years that Holcomb was governor the General Assembly passed acts that established a retirement program for teachers, created a health insurance program, and limited the hours that women were allowed to work in factories. He was governor during World War I and mobilized the state's support efforts. After the war, he was caught up in the question of woman suffrage. Governor Holcomb passed away March 5, 1932, at his home in Southington.
