William Lanson

Born around 1785, possibly in Derby. Died May 1851.

New Haven resident, starting about 1803.

1810 - built extension of Long Wharf.

1814 - CT General Assembly disenfranchised African American voters.

1815 - Lanson petitioned General Assembly to exempt African Americans from taxation if they could not vote.

1825 - contracted to build New Haven section of Farmington Canal.

1830 - Opened Liberian Hotel.

Helped found  African United Ecclesiastical Society and the African Improvement Society.

2020 September - unveiling of sculpture on Canal Trail in New Haven.
