Scotland, Windham County

Town incorporated in May 1857. Parent town: Windham.


Probate overview

Probate matters for the town of Scotland were processed by the Windham Probate District, which was constituted in October 1719 from the Hartford and New London Probate Districts. The Windham Probate District merged with the Colchester, Eastford (part), and Hampton Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Windham – Colchester Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Chaplin, Colchester, Hampton, Lebanon, Scotland, and Windham.

Seymour, New Haven County

Town incorporated in May 1850. Parent town: Derby.


Probate overview

The Derby Probate District was constituted July 4, 1858, from the New Haven Probate District and began processing probate matters for the Town of Seymour on January 1, 1899. On January 5, 2011 the Derby Probate District merged with the Woodbridge Probate District to created an enlarged Derby Probate District, which now serves the municipalities of Ansonia, Derby, Seymour, and Woodbridge.

Sharon, Litchfield County

Established 1739.


Probate overview

The Sharon Probate District was constituted in October, 1755, from the Litchfield Probate District. The Sharon Probate District merged with the Canaan, Cornwall, Norfolk, and Salisbury Probate Districts on January 1, 2007 to create the Northwest Corner Probate District. The Northwest Corner Probate District merged with the Harwinton, Litchfield, and Thomaston Probate Districts on January 5, 2011, to create the Litchfield Hills Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Canaan, Cornwall, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Thomaston, and Warren.

  • October 1739 - October 1742, New Haven District
  • October 1742 - October 1755, Litchfield District
  • October 1755 - December 31, 2006, Sharon District
  • January 1, 2007 - January 4, 2011, Northwest Corner District

Shelton, Fairfield County

Town incorporated January 1789 as Huntington. Changed name to Shelton, 1919. Parent town: Stratford.


Probate overview

The Huntington Probate District was constituted May 1889 from the Bridgeport and Derby Probate Districts. Name of town and probate district changed from Huntington to Shelton on August 29, 1919. The Shelton Probate District currently serves the municipality of Shelton.

Sherman, Fairfield County

Town incorporated 1802. Parent town: New Fairfield.


Probate overview

The Sherman Probate District was constituted June 4, 1846, from the New Milford Probate District. The Sherman Probate District was absorbed by the New Fairfield Probate District on January 8, 2003. The New Fairfield Probate District merged with the Brookfield and New Milford Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Housatonic Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Bridgewater, Brookfield, New Fairfield, New Milford, and Sherman.

  • June 4, 1846 - January 7, 2003, Sherman District
  • January 8, 2003 - January 4, 2011, New Fairfield District

Simsbury, Hartford County

Established 1670.


Probate overview

The Simsbury Probate District was constituted May 1769, from the Hartford Probate District. The Simsbury Probate District merged on January 5, 2011 with the Avon, Canton, and Granby Probate Districts to create the Simsbury Regional Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Avon, Canton, Granby, and Simsbury.

The Simsbury Probate District also served the following municipalities at various times:

  • Barkhamsted, May 1769 - May 1825
  • Canton, May 1806 - June 6, 1841
  • Colebrook, May 1769 - May 1779
  • Granby, October 1786 - May 1807
  • Hartland, May 1765 - May 1807
  • New Hartford, October 1800 - May 1825
  • Winchester, May 1769 - May 1779

Somers, Tolland County

Town incorporated July 1734 as part of Hampshire County, Massachusetts. Annexed to Connecticut 1749. Parent town: Enfield.


Probate overview

The Somers Probate District was constituted June 3, 1834 from the Ellington Probate District. The Somers Probate District merged with the Stafford Probate District on January 6, 1999. The Stafford Probate merged with the Enfield Probate District on January 5, 2011 to create the North Central Probate District, which serves the municipalities of Enfield, Somers, Stafford, and Union.

Town incorporated in May 1845. Parent town: East Windsor.

The East Windsor Probate District, constituted May 1782, from the Hartford and Stafford Probate Districts, processed probate matters for the Town of South Windsor from its incorporation until the creation of the Region #4 Probate District (Greater Windsor District) on January 5, 2011. The Greater Windsor District serves the municipalities of East Windsor, South Windsor, and Windsor.
