Portland, Middlesex County

Town incorporated May 1841. Parent town: Chatham (now named East Hampton).


Probate overview

The Portland Probate District was constituted April 22, 1913, from the Chatham Probate District. The Chatham/East Hampton Probate District Court records previous to January 6, 1915 are held by the Portland Probate District. The Portland Probate District merged with the East Haddam, East Hampton, and Marlborough Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Region #14 Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of East Haddam, East Hampton, Marlborough and Portland.

Preston, New London County

Town established in October 1687.

The Norwich Probate District, constituted October, 1748, from the New London Probate District, has processed probate matters for the Town of Preston since October 1748. The Norwich Probate District currently serves the municipalities of Bozrah, Franklin, Griswold, Lisbon, Norwich, Preston, Sprague, and Voluntown.

Prospect, New Haven County

Town established in May 1827. Parent towns: Cheshire and Waterbury.

Probate overview

The Putnam Probate District was constituted July 5, 1856, from the Thompson Probate District, and merged on January 5, 2011 with the Ashford, Brooklyn, Eastford (part), Pomfret, Thompson, and Woodstock Probate Districts to create the Northeast Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Ashford, Brooklyn, Eastford, Pomfret, Putnam, Thompson, and Woodstock.

The Redding Probate District was constituted May 24, 1839, from the Danbury Probate District. The Redding Probate District merged with the Bethel, Newtown, and Ridgefield Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Northern Fairfield County Probate District, which serves the municipalities of Bethel, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield.

The Ridgefield Probate District was constituted June 10, 1841, from the Danbury Probate District. The Ridgefield Probate District merged with the Bethel, Newtown, and Redding Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Northern Fairfield County Probate District, which serves the municipalities of Bethel, Newtown, Redding and Ridgefield.

Probate matters for the town of Rocky Hill were processed by the Hartford Probate District from 1843-1975, when the Newington Probate District was constituted from the Hartford Probate District. The Newington district has processed probate matters for Rocky Hill since that time. The Newington Probate District currently serves the municipalities of Newington, Rocky Hill, and Wethersfield.

The Roxbury Probate District merged with the Oxford, Southbury, Washington, and Woodbury Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Region # 22 Probate District, which serves the municipalities of Bethlehem, Oxford, Roxbury, Southbury, Washington, Watertown, and Woodbury.

The Salem Probate District was constituted on July 9, 1841 from the Colchester and New London Probate Districts. The Salem Probate District merged with the East Lyme, Montville, and Old Lyme Probate Districts on January 5, 2011 to create the Region #32 Probate District, which serves the municipalities of East Lyme, Montville, Old Lyme, and Salem.

Salisbury, Litchfield County

Established 1741.


Probate overview

The Salisbury Probate District was constituted June 6, 1847, from the Sharon Probate District. The Salisbury Probate District merged with the Canaan, Cornwall, Norfolk, and Sharon Probate Districts on January 1, 2007 to create the Northwest Corner Probate District. This district then merged with the Harwinton, Litchfield, and Thomaston Probate Districts on January 5, 2011, to create the Litchfield Hills Probate District, which currently serves the municipalities of Canaan, Cornwall, Harwinton, Kent, Litchfield, Morris, Norfolk, North Canaan, Salisbury, Sharon, Thomaston, and Warren.
