  • 1777 Connecticut’s State Attorney for Hartford County
  • 1777-1783 Representative to the Continental Congress
  • 1787 Constitutional Convention delegate from Connecticut
  • With Roger Sherman drafted the Great Compromise, also known as the Connecticut Compromise
  • 1789-1796, Connecticut senators in the new federal government
  • 1796-1799 the third Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court
