Office of War Information (OWI)

Created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt for World War II (WWII) on June 13, 1942 by Executive Order 9182 and in existence until 1945. It consolidated several government organizations into one. Journalist Elmer Davis was tapped to head the OWI. Like the Committee on Public Information (CPI), the OWI had both foreign and domestic divisions. OWI established Voice of America (VOA) and the Bureau of Motion Pictures (BMP) worked with Hollywood film makers.

Library of Congress (LOC): "Photographers working for the U.S. government's Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI) between 1939 and 1944 made approximately 1,600 color photographs that depict life in the United States, including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The pictures focus on rural areas and farm labor, as well as aspects of World War II mobilization, including factories, railroads, aviation training, and women working."
