Connecticut has been officially known as "The Constitution State" since 1959.  The nickname refers to Connecticut's Fundamental Orders, which was arguably the first written constitution in the world.  The Fundamental Orders, adopted in 1639, set forth the framework for Connecticut's government, who was eligible to vote, and how laws were to be made.
