Sharing Digital Navigators Among Public Libraries

Lessons from Institute and Museum Library Service National Leadership Grant LG254838-OLS-23: Designing and Implementing a Replicable Regional Digital Navigator Sharing Plan

Shadowing Experienced Navigators

The Project Coordinator who also was volunteering some navigation hours, made himself available for newly navigators to shadow.  He would do his work at one of the many libraries anchoring navigators and allow the new hires to watch, support, or work in his presence.  This experience helped navigators set effective schedules for themselves.

For example, one navigator wrote:

"After shadowing the Project Coordinator, I think it would be better for me to possibly split the 7.5 hours between two or multiple days. I think this would be best as it can account for unexpected events that may go over the regular time, or potentially be shorter than the regular time, and it can offer clients more flexibility in scheduling future appointments. Another thing I noticed while shadowing is how fast energy can drain when having many clients in a day. With multiple days I think it would allow me and other digital navigators to keep the same energy with every client compared to potentially being tired after the 6th or 7th client of the day."

This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, National Leaders Grants - Libraries award LG-254838-OLS-23, administered by the CT State Library.
