The Connecticut State Library holds most pre-1920 probate estate papers. Most have been indexed in the Library's Probate Estate Papers Index. The index cards are arranged alphabetically by individual's last name, first names, then chronologically. The cards have the individual's name, town of residence, probate district, and list of items contained in the estate packet. See the Probate Estate Paper Index District Listing document above to see what Districts and Dates are covered.

Another useful index is the Godard Digest, which is an inventory created by former state librarian George S. Godard of probate papers on file in the Connecticut State Library. They are arranged first by probate district, and within each district by name of person. The digest has been digitized by FamilySearch.
