Probate Estate Paper Index

The Connecticut State Library holds most pre-1850 probate estate papers and, for much of the state, papers dated into the 1900s. Most have been indexed in the Library's Probate Estate Papers Index. The index cards are arranged alphabetically by individual's last name and first names. The cards have the individual's name, town of residence, probate district, and list of items contained in the estate packet.

Most of the estate papers have been microfilmed. The microfilms are available here. Family Search has also been digitizing the microfilm. There are two collections; Probate files early to 1880 & Probate files 1881-1915. Most are viewable in person at a Family History Center.

The Guide to the Probate Files Collection Early to 1880 will give the page number to the Probate Districts. 

 Ancestry.com has also recently digitized much of the microfilm collection. Connecticut residents can search this remotely. (See the link below). See also our Guide to Probate Records. (See the Button under Probate Estate Paper Index in the upper left hand corner of the page).
